Andre Faro, PhD

André Faro is a psychologist (2004) with a Master’s in Health Sciences (2007) and a PhD in Psychology from the Federal University of Bahia (2010). Since 2013, he has been a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) and was a Visiting Scholar (post-doctorate, 2017) at Johns Hopkins University, working with Dr. William Eaton at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He leads the Health Psychology Lab at UFS (GEPPS), mentoring undergraduate and master’s students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral fellows (25 members). Dr. Faro has also been a National Researcher since 2018, supported by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).

Dr. Faro's research focuses on health psychology, with a current interest in the interface between public health and mental health, aiming to identify the main determinants of psychological adjustment and their impacts on general health. His studies cover various themes in health psychology, from basic research to applied psychology. He is currently developing resources for basic psychological care in Brazil, seeking low-cost, high-precision, and brief interventions that are easily accessible to the general population.

To date, his academic career has resulted in over 200 publications, including scientific articles, book chapters, and books, on both national and international platforms. His work addresses constructs related to psychological adaptation (e.g., self-esteem, self-efficacy, and coping), clinical conditions, and mental health outcomes (e.g., chronic diseases, anxiety, depression, self-injurious, and suicidal behaviors), primarily in adult populations but also among adolescents. Since 2020, Dr. Faro and his lab have given special attention to the short- and long-term psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Brazilian population.

Recognized as one of the top 2% researchers in Psychology by the ADScientific Index and Stanford University in his country and continent over the past few years, Dr. Faro leads funded research projects on psychological adjustment during the COVID-19 pandemic and the development of adaptive skills in adolescents. His work advances scientific knowledge and informs public health strategies through collaboration with governmental agencies to develop precise models for adaptive capacity. Dr. Faro also collaborates on a multicenter study to stratify the risk of suicide attempts in the Brazilian population (CNPq) and on the Global Burden of Disease Project (GBD).

Dr. Faro is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH, WHO), the International Affiliate of the American Psychological Association (APA, Div 17 [Society of Counseling Psychology], Div 38 [Health Psychology], and Div 52 [International Psychology]), the Interamerican Society of Psychology (SIP), and the Brazilian Society of Psychology (SBP). He is also a member and mentor in the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS) and the African Academy of Sciences (AAS). Additionally, he actively engages in public outreach and media to disseminate his research findings to a broader audience.

Dr. Faro is dedicated to advancing the field of health psychology through innovative research and practical applications. He is committed to improving mental health care and public health strategies, making significant contributions to both the academic and practical realms. Looking ahead, Dr. Faro plans to continue exploring the psychological impacts of global health concerns and develop new interventions to support mental well-being in diverse populations.
